Former Gramophone Young Artist of the Year performs Ravel’s Violin Sonata No 2

One might not expect to hear the blues associated with French composer, Maurice Ravel. Yet violinist Johan Dalene and pianist Christian Ihle Hadland breath a jazz-like energy into the piece, that, with portamentos and some almost swung rhythms, still bares the composer’s hallmark chromatic harmonic language. This recording features on Stained Glass, a newly released album of 20th century works for the violin and piano, including composers such as Arvo Pärt, Lili Boulanger, Prokofiev and Grażyna Bacewicz. Stained Glass is available now on CD and digital.

John Dalene was the recipient of Gramophone's Young Artist of the Year award in 2022 and is currently an artist on BIS, the recipient of this year’s Gramophone Label of the Year award. If you wish to hear more, below is a performance of the Nielsen and Sibelius Violin Concertos which you can listen to via Apple Music.
